Department of Turkish Folk Literature
General Information
History:
The Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Iğdır University was established under the Faculty of Science and Letters on June 16, 2011, with the approval of the Higher Education Executive Board. The department, in accordance with Law No. 2547 and related regulations, aims to train qualified academic personnel capable of conducting research in the fields of Turkish language, literature, folklore, and culture. The Department of Turkish Language and Literature began admitting undergraduate students in the 2018-2019 academic year. With its academic staff possessing extensive expertise in Turkish language and literature, the department contributes significantly to both academic and cultural development. Currently, the department consists of six divisions: Old Turkic Language, Modern Turkic Language, Old Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Folk Literature, and Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures. The department has shown rapid growth and graduated its first students in the 2021-2022 academic year.
Program Outcomes:
Graduates of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature acquire the following competencies:

- Ability to develop interdisciplinary approaches to solve linguistic and literary problems.
Language of Education / Program Type:
The language of instruction in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature is Turkish. In addition to the four-year undergraduate program, the department offers both thesis and non-thesis graduate programs. Graduate education provides students with the opportunity to delve deeply into the fields of language and literature and specialize in areas such as contemporary Turkic dialects and cultural studies.
Infrastructure:
The department offers students opportunities to participate in various research projects. Additionally, students receive academic support and guidance to develop their own research

Double Major/Minor Programs
Double Major Program: It provides students with the opportunity to earn an additional undergraduate degree in a field of interest outside their primary area of study. Through this program, students can complete coursework in two distinct departments and graduate with diplomas in both fields, broadening their academic and professional qualifications.
Minor Program: It allows students to take a specified number of courses in an area of interest outside their primary field of study. Upon completing the minor program, students receive an official certificate in that area; however, this does not equate to a second undergraduate diploma.

Exchange Programs
It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a designated period. Through these programs, students gain the chance to experience different cultures, improve their foreign language skills, and acquire valuable international academic experience. Purpose of the Department:
The aim of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Iğdır University is to train qualified individuals with in-depth knowledge in the fields of Turkish language, literature, culture, and folklore. The department seeks to provide students with the tools to comprehend the historical and cultural dimensions of the Turkish language, develop skills to analyze and interpret literary works, and equip them to follow the modern developments of the Turkish language. In this regard, the department not only imparts knowledge of language and literature but also instills critical thinking and research skills related to Turkish culture and literature, enabling students to specialize in their fields.
