About Us

​Within the structure of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Iğdır University, there are six (6) sub-disciplines: Old Turkic Language, Modern Turkic Language, Old Turkic Literature, Modern Turkic Literature, Turkish Folk Literature, and Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures. The aim of the department is to train individuals capable of conducting research in the fields of Turkish language, literature, folklore, and culture; to conduct various studies and research; and to promote them through publications, conferences, seminars, and similar methods. The courses offered by the sub-disciplines focus on the subjects of Turkish oral and written sources, Turkish traditions and customs, the literary perspectives shaped within the Turkish cultural sphere from past to present, and the artists of this literature. Examples from historical and contemporary Turkic dialects are introduced, and linguistic analyses are conducted through texts.

History

​The Department of Turkish Language and Literature was established based on the proposal by the Rectorate of Iğdır University to create departments and disciplines within the Faculty of Science and Letters, as per Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, amended by Law No. 2880. The establishment was approved during the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on June 16, 2011.

​Subsequently, on July 25, 2014, the Rectorate of Iğdır University proposed the creation of additional departments and disciplines within the Faculty of Science and Letters, which was again approved during the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on September 24, 2014. As a result, five sub-disciplines were established under the Department of Turkish Language and Literature. Later, "Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures" was added as the sixth sub-discipline.

​The Department of Turkish Language and Literature became active in the 2018-2019 academic year with the enrollment of 61 students. The department awarded its first graduates in the 2021-2022 academic year and its second graduates in the 2022-2023 academic year.


Fields of Work

​Graduates of our department have the opportunity to work in various academic fields as "Turkish Language Lecturers," "Research Assistants," and "Instructors" at universities. Additionally, they can find employment in public institutions such as the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Culture, and TRT, as well as in private organizations operating in the fields of media and advertising. Moreover, individuals who have received education in Turkish Language and Literature can pursue careers as editors, proofreaders, copywriters, screenwriters, critics, columnists, and public relations specialists for various organizations.
